For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. During a heavy enemy bombardment a shell burst at the entrance of a dug-out, burying a gun crew and blowing him downstairs. Nevertheless, he at once assisted in digging out his buried men, although he twice collapsed while at work. He remained at duty, firing his machine gun until all chance of the enemy attack had passed. He was then ordered to the aid post for treatment, after which he insisted on returning to his post. He set a magnificent example of determination and devotion to duty.
