10th Anniversary: Clan MacKay Society of New Scotland

The Clan MacKay Society of New Scotland has its roots in a gathering of interested individuals of MacKay name or heritage held in 1975 in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. In 1995, the Society was twenty years of age.

Mrs. Ida MacKay is held in high esteem as Founder and Past-President of the Clan MacKay Society of New Scotland. She founded our society in memory of her late husband, Dr. R. W. Murray MacKay, who inspired her with his vision of a Clan MacKay Society in Canada. The development of the Clan MacKay Society of New Scotland gained momentum due to the inspiration of Kenneth MacKay of Scotland, and Sandy MacKay of Durban, South Africa. They came to Nova Scotia during the first International Gathering of the Clans (1979), in official capacity as officers of the Clan MacKay Society in Scotland, and spent much time supporting and encouraging Ida MacKay and the loyal group of interested MacKays and McKays (by name and/or heritage).

The formal inaugural meeting of the Clan MacKay Society of New Scotland was held in November, 1979, with Dr. Alasdair McKay as Chair. John Fraser McKay accepted nomination as Founding President, and still maintains an interest in the growth and development of the Society.

The Clan MacKay Society of New Scotland was officially incorporated in October, 1981, and was the first MacKay organization or society to officially incorporate within Canada.

The 10th Anniversary of the Clan MacKay Society of New Scotland, based on its formal inaugural meeting in 1979, was commemorated at the AGM in May 1989. During this AGM, Mrs. Ida MacKay was awarded the honour of President Emeritus of the Clan MacKay Society of New Scotland, and presented with a framed certificate commemorating that important occasion.

John Fraser McKay spoke briefly, congratulating all whose efforts had contributed to the ongoing success of the Clan MacKay Society of Scotland. He passed on the challenge for the future: "Let's keep our MacKay Society going and growing."
