Distinquished Service Order Recipients -- Clan MacKay
The Distinguished Service Order Medal
First World War
The Distinguished Service Order (DSO) was awarded to officers who first
had to have been honourably "Mentioned in Dispatches (MID) for
meritorious service in the field, or before the enemy." It was therefore,
not strictly speaking, solely a gallantry medal.. It was used as such
however for officers above the rank of Captain, the latter and more junior
officers being eligible for the Military Cross.
The DSO was awarded to 710 Canadians, 89 of whom won it twice,
and fifteen officers a remarkable three times. Of the total, two
MacKay clansfolk won the DSO in the First World War. They are:
Major Atwood Talbot Mackay;
Canadian Field Artillery (gazetted 03 June 1918).
Major John Keiller MacKay;
Canadian Field Artillery, (gazetted 25 November 1916)
