Frank Adams advises: "the style `Mac-ic' used by certain persons of these families is not a `chiefly' title, but (as explained by Sir John Maclean of Duart, Bt.) actually denotes a cadet of the line of the affixed name, usually applied when the person was not actual chief or chieftain, but when there was a dispute in progress. e.g., Clan Ranald, where prior to the time of Ian Moyderlach, the title was MacAllan.
