Joseph Burbridge McCullagh (1842-1896)

A native of Dublin, Ireland, Joseph B. McCullagh
worked his way to America on a ship at the age of 11 and
eventually became an apprentice printer in St Louis,
Missouri. His first reporting assignment was for the St
Louis Democrat in 1859. After a short stint in General
Fremont's bodyguard, McCullagh became a war correspondent
for the Cincinnati Daily Gazette.
He covered the Fort Henry-Donelson campaign from the
deck of the USS St Louis which was hit 65 times by
Confederate shellfire.and was present at the disasterous
battle of Shiloh. After his paper refused to publish his
account of Union fumbling at the battle, he quit, only to
be picked up by the Cincinnati Commercial at double
salary.
After the Vicksburg campaign, McCullagh became the
Commercial's Washington correspondent and also worked for
the Associated Press of New York. McCullagh was noted for
his interviews with prominent persons such as US Grant,
Andrew Jackson and Alexander Stevens. After the Civil War
he successfully edited several papers ending with the St
Louis Globe-Democrat, the first paper he ever worked for.
Joseph McCullagh died in an accidental fall from a window
during an illness in 1896.
