Lawyer, suffragette
Catharine McCulloch was born 4 June 1862 in
Ronsomville, New York and studied law at Union College of
Law, Chicago. Married to a lawyer and mother of four
children, she battled against prejudice of the day against
female lawyers. Ahead of her times, Catharine McCulloch
authoured a key bill providing for women suffrage in
presidential elections which took 20 ryears before being
accepted by the state of Illinois. Her victory was an
important strategic breakthrough for other women's groups
and she became a National American Women Suffrage
organizer and officer. McCulloch travelled widely on
speaking tours and was instrumental in organizing
midwestern sufragette conventions and conceiving the idea
for suffrage auto tours. She died 20 April 1945. For
