James King: Creator of Statue to Mary Sutherland

Ona Bjornson writes: "Mary Sutherland, whose life-size memorial stands in the Garden of Eden (Pictou County, Nova Scotia), fascinates me. She is dressed in her wedding gown and it is an awesome spectacle to see her gazing out over the blue Pictou County hills."

This statue is also a tribute to James King, a stone mason in New Glasgow, who completed the statue after the death of Roderick Morrison who was to pay him for this work.

Eunice Wood writes: "I have personally visited her stone many times and always marvelled at the perfection of her face and hair and the delicate fingers with the wedding band on the fourth finger of her left hand."

Roderick Morrison asked James King, a stonemason, to create a life size figure of Mary [his wife] from a photo of her in her bridal gown. Morrison died before it was completed and had not paid for the work. In spite of this James King finished creating the the image from the native stone, and had the memorial erected above the grave where today it stands as firmly as when it was placed on the rising hillside many years ago.

This statue of the bride in her wedding dress, where even the dress folds fall into natural lines about the stone figure, and the wedding band on her finger, is probably the best work done by James King.
