Origin of Clan Dunlop
Origin of Clan Dunlop
The Scottish family of Dunlop takes its name from the Gaelic community of
"dun laib" ("muddy fort"> in Ayrshire.
In 1496, a family living in this area styled themselves as "Dunlop of that
Ilk" (meaning `Dunlop of that place'). From that time, the Scottish
families of Dunlop spread throughout the western regions of Scotland.
