There is presently no chief of the House of Douglas in Scotland. The Chiefship is therefore said to be "dormant." Until such status should be changed, there is no "House of Douglas" or "Chief in Scotland" with whom one might seek affiliation. Currently there is a movement to establish a claim as Chief of the House of Douglas.
If an active Chief and House of Douglas should become a reality, it will then be incumbent upon any members to make application to such organization or chief and establish personal claim of right of affiliation to them. We do extend the privilege of affiliation with us to Douglas Scots and Septs worldwide, and currently have members in six or eight foreign countries.
We therefore are an American organization, independent or any controlling
societies here or abroad. We intend to continue every effort to maintain
a cordial relationship with the office of The Lord Lyon, The Duke of
Hamilton, The Earl of Hume, The Duke of Buccleuch and Queensberry and The
Earl of Morton and others with whom we may become acquainted. We ask all
such persons to advise us on any matter to assure cordial and diplomatic
relationships and historical accuracy. We recognize the ignorance of most
Americans on these matters of peerage and apologize to our cousins abroad
for any trespasses in such matters.
