The extent of Douglas power was so great that 17 castles have supposedly been connected with the clan.

The partial list which follows is taken from the official brochure of the Clan Douglas Society of North America, Ltd. It warns: "Politics and power were so complicated that one Could debate some of these relationships.

Douglas - original seat
- now only minimal ruins remain.

Drumlanrig - ancient Douglas stronghold
and Dumfriesshire home of Dukes of Buccleuch and Queensberry.
Perfectly preserved.

Bowhill - Border home of the above.
Preserved.

Lennoxglove - Home of the Dukes of Douglas and Hamilton.
Preserved.

Hermitage - a restored 13th century Douglas stronghold.

Hume - Ancient links with Douglas
"The Hirsel" is the home of Sir Alexander Douglas Home.

Roxburgh - captured by a Douglas.

Tantallon - Stronghold of the Red Douglasses.
Now in ruins.

Bothwell - Ruins

Aberdour - Home of the Earls of Morton.
Fifeshire. Preserved.

Balvenie - Owned by Sir James (the Gross), 7th Earl of Douglas

Leven Castle - Initial home of the Earl of Morton.

Morton Castle - in Nithsdale, Dumfriesshire.
Home of the Douglasses of Morton in Nithsdale.

Sandilands Castle - Fifeshire.
In ruins.
