Gaelic Name: Caimbeul
Sir Colin Campbell, son of Sir Duncan Campbell of Lochow, is regarded as founder of the Breadalbane branch of Clan Campbell. He inherited the lands of Glenorchy from this father. Through marriage to a daughter of Lord Lorn, he acquired one third of the lands of Lorn.
In 1689, Sir John Campbell of Glenorchy (Earl of Breadalbane), was employed to bribe the Highland clans to submit to King William III. He was considered to be "as cunning as a fox, wise as a serpent and as slippery as an eel."
