We pay tribute to Dr. James M. Cameron, one of Pictou County's noted authors and historians. His death came just a few days after his beloved wife of 55 years, Lillas, passed away.

Dr. Cameron has left his native county, province and nation a great legacy, 15 books which provide us with an important link to the past. All his works were painstakingly researched and accurate. He preferred to deal in facts and not fiction.

Many of his works appeared in this newspaper over the years under the title "Your Yesteryears," and they later appeared in book form to be enjoyed by present and future generations.

He loved writing about the people of Pictou County, their successes and tragedies. He was clearly the historical expert of his era. His extensive research made him a well-known figure in historical circles, and he was often called on by people from around the world to help them document family trees and other historical data.

His early start in newspapering career was interrupted by the outbreak of the Second World War, and with the rank of Lieutenant saw active service with the Royal Canadian Artillery in Canada, the United Kingdom, and Northwest Europe. He retired at the war's end with the rank of major. He returned to the county to become Publisher and Editor of the Eastern Chronicle, and founder of radio station CKEC. He later went to Ottawa where he adjudicated veterans pensions as a member of the Canadian Pension Commission.

When he retired, Dr. Cameron and his wife returned to Pictou County, and with her strong support he pursued his passion for researching and writing.

His works brought him many deserved awards including: induction as a member of the Order of Canada in 1990, a fellow of the Royal Nova Scotia Historical Society, an honourary degree from St. Francis Xavier University, along with honours from the Canadian Historical Society and the American Association for State and Local History. Recently the New Glasgow Rotary Club recognized his achievements, and his long association with the Club, by making him an honourary president.

He will be missed in the community, but his many books and other writings are a lasting testimony to the life of Dr. James W. Cameron.

We offer sincere condolences to his family members.
