Brown is one of the more common surnames in Scotland, and often appears as Broun; such as the the Broun branch of Colstoun. It may derive from the name Brunn in Old High German, or from the German personal name of Brun (Brunnhilde).
In its French form, the surname is LeBrun. The Broun clan of Colstoun are said to descend from the Royal House of France. Their crest badge features the fleur-de-lys, a symbol of the French Monarchy, as well as the provincial symbol of the Canadian province of Quebec.
