History of Name Brown

[Book] History of Clan Brown

[Thin Blue Line]

Brown is one of the more common surnames in Scotland, and often appears as Broun; such as the the Broun branch of Colstoun. It may derive from the name Brunn in Old High German, or from the German personal name of Brun (as in Brunnhilde).

It is also thought to refer to the colour of the original bearer's hair, complexion, clothing or whatever.

In Scotland, Brown has many areas of origin and has been recorded in several documents since the 13th Century.
