Wayne Groszko is riding a tandem bicycle across Canada in 2006 and dedicating the ride to people with Huntington Disease.
The Ride
The voyage of about 8000 kilometres began May 1, 2006 in Halifax, and will pass through 10 provinces on the
way to Victoria, which Wayne hopes to reach in September.
Why a Tandem Bicycle?
Wayne is stopping in many communities along the way and offering to take people for short rides on the tandem (double) bicycle, for fun! The tandem is a great way to enjoy bicycling, including for some people who might not otherwise be able to drive a bicycle. Guest riders are also welcome to join for longer distances by special arrangement, either on the tandem or on your own bicycles.
Huntington Disease
Huntington Disease (HD), also known as Huntington's chorea, is an inherited neural disorder characterized by abnormal
movements (called chorea). It takes its name from George Huntington, an Ohio physician who first described
the disease precisely in 1872. HD affects one in every 10,000 people in Canada. It is a degenerative disease, causing
a loss of ability to control physical movements and speech. There is not yet an effective cure or treatment, but
medical researchers have made great advances in understanding Huntington Disease and there is much hope.
How You Can Help
If you want to contribute to the effort to cure Huntington Disease, or to help support quality-of-life programs for
people living with HD, please contact Wayne via the link below to make a donation or support
the ride.
