                 *ENDANGERED SPECIES PETITION

                 From: "Rita Morbia" ;

                 Hi folks

Just a bit of an update on what's happening on the federal endangered
                 species front.

                 1. The latest I've heard is that an endangered species protection bill will
be tabled in early November and a Memorandum of Understanding brought to
Cabinet fairly soon after the House resumes in September. Some of this may
be dependent upon the results of a cabinet shuffle. Will Christine Stewart
be shuffled? If so, by whom will she be replaced? At this point, rumours
                 abound.

                 2. The industry/NGO collaborative (Species At Risk Working Group - SARWG)
have been working on translating the appropriate parts of the policy
document released last year into legislation. Once again, the members of
this group are Sierra Club of Canada, Canadian Nature Federation, Canadian
Wildlife Federation, Canadian Pulp and Paper Association, Mining Association
of Canada and National Agriculture Environment Committee. This legislation
is scheduled to be released in draft form for comment in the middle of July.
As well, a consultation is scheduled in late August for those wanting to
grill us face-to-face about the bill. If we can revise it in time for when
the House resumes, I think it would be ideal. The goal of this bill is
basically to try and raise the bar before the government's legislation comes
out. Please note, that this is all rather ambitious timetable-wise and may
                 change.

                 3. We want to wrap up getting signatures on the petition mid to late
August. To motivate Sierra Club volunteers and others, the National
Office is proud to announce A PRIZE!!!! to the Sierran who, between now
and Aug. 15th gets the most signatures. There are few contest rules,
except that petitions have to be received by myself by Aug. 16th

So, what's the PRIZE, you ask? The PRIZE is actually a SUR-PRIZE !!!!!!
But I promise you, it'll be substantial and it'll be good. So please get
the message out (see below) on all your listserves, etc. Feel free to
change it if it's just way to cheesy for you. The more signatures we
have, the more likely the petition will make an impact.

CONTACT Rita Morbia ; for a copy of the petition.

This is a critical time in the history of endangered species legislation.
We all need to act to make sure an effective bill is passed.

If you need more information, contact: Rita Morbia, Biodiversity Campaign
Coordinator, Sierra Club of Canada, Suite 412 - 1 Nicholas St., Ottawa, ON

endangered species in the subject heading).

                 Good luck!!!

                 Rita Morbia
