Sierra Club - Chebucto Group Newsletter

CHEBUCTO GROUP IS STILL LOOKING FOR LEADERS AND VOLUNTEERS ... AND
VOLUNTEER LEADERS! Elections are coming up soon; time is running out to
be a candidate in our election of Executive Committee (EXCOM) members.

If you've been waiting to get involved with the Sierra Club, now's the
time!

Leaders are elected for a two-year term, and are responsible for the
operation of Chebucto Group in Atlantic Canada. This is essentially the
same idea as the Chapter ExCom (described below) but on a local scale.
We're also looking for people to help NOMINATE candidates, and to run the
ELECTION.

For info or to voluntter, please contact John May at 902-235-2822 or email
sierra@chebucto.ns.ca

Actually, a LOT of committees could use your help, right about now! We've
started our search for Chapter Executive Committee (EXCOM) members. This
is the steering committee that runs the Chapter, so if you dream of world
domination, er ... if you'd like to make a major impact on the planet (in
a good way) over a two-year term, we'd sure like to hear from you.

Contact Jamie Kirkpatrick in our chapter Office if
this interests you. Also, our NOMINATING Committee and ELECTIONS Committee
could use some short term volunteer help this summer. And our FUNd RAISING
Committee could use some enthusiastic volunteers ... we provide the
experience ... :)

As always, please remember to reply to the contact person listed for each
article in this e-newsletter, not to the sender (me). thanks!

1 - Chapter OUTINGS Committee Needs YOU!

In our struggle for environmental protection, Outings play an important
role in education and appreciation. Outings not only bring you closer to
mother earth but to other people who share the same values and ideas.

Camping, hiking, canoeing, kayaking, snowshoeing, and horseback riding are
only some of the activities available. We currently have an Outings Chair
for the Greater Toronto Area (Ingrid Sikorcin), Ottawa (Jason Kania)and
Montreal (Ryan Young). It would be great if Outings were to be held in
cities and towns all across Eastern Canada. We are tying to get an Eastern
Canada Outings Committe together. If there are people interested in
becoming outings chairs, outings leaders or an outings participant,
contact Ginette Battikha at home in Markham (905) 475-2930 or by e-mail at
gbattikha@yahoo.com .

GREAT LAKES FOREST COALITION

We are looking for someone from Ontario to participate as a representative
in the Sierra Club's Great Lakes Forest Coalition.

Representatives will be expected to attend two meetings per year (next one
Nov. 5-7, probably in Michigan). Between meetings, coaltion reps will
participate on a listserv list and share information on forest issues in
the Great Lakes Region. The coalition members come are from Ontario,
Wisconsin, Minnesota, Illinois and Michigan.

Coalition groups include the Sierra Club, Earthroots, Wildlands League,
Great Lakes United, Audobon Society, Environmental Law Centre (Chicago),
Federation of Ontario Naturalists, Environment North (Thunder Bay).

The Club's representative should be familiar with forest issues in the
great Lakes region, and should preferably work in some capacity with these
issues on a fairly regular basis, so that the rep has ready access to info
that they can share on listserv, etc. Right now the group is really just
doing information sharing. Later on, it will engage in some active
projects. For example, making a chart of laws for comparative purposes,
looking at NAFTA and possibly making an appeal under that for some forest
protection, etc.

The coalition's goals are:

* to create a network of protected spaces representing the range of
ecosystems of the Great Lakes forests;

* to promote ecologically sustainable forestry and forest use;

* to promote economically sustainable forest-based communities.

We will achieve this through a variety of means including public
education, research, policy and legal reform.
