It's not just Chebucto Group that's recruiting ... Chebucto Group is a
part of the Eastern Canada Chapter of the Sierra Club. Both are run by a
steering committee called the "ExCom" ... and both are recruiting.
From: Jamie Kirkpatrick
JOIN THE TEAM THAT WILL LEAD THE CHAPTER INTO THE NEW MILLENIUM!
The Nominating Committee seeks persons with a broad array of talents
and perspectives to run as candidates for the Sierra Club - Eastern
Canada Chapter's Executive Committee (ExCom).
The ExCom consists of 11 Chapter members elected at large for 2-year
terms, and other Chapter members who are appointed by and who
represent the Groups within the Chapter (1 representative per group;
current official groups are the Ottawa, Chebucto and Ron Burchell
Groups). This call for nominations pertains to the 5 at-large
positions available on the ExCom.
It is the ExCom's responsibility to guide the Chapter and to manage
its affairs in a positive, progressive, and conscientious way. The
ExCom directs our volunteers and staff in the management of the Club
and makes the decisions that will guide us into the future. People
interested in this position should be:
* dedicated to the goals of the Sierra Club;
* able to listen and communicate effectively;
* willing to dedicate significant personal time to ExCom duties and
committee work;
* able to think and plan strategically and politically;
* knowledgeable regarding critical environmental and political issues;
* knowledgeable of the workings of the Club; and
* willing to work as a team toward consensus decisions.
Candidates for the ExCom must be at least 18 years of age.
The ExCom is a working board. All members are expected to devote time,
energy, and creativity to projects and commitments and to carry them
through to their successful conclusion. Commitments include preparing for
and attending, in person or via conference call, regularly scheduled
meetings, communicating regularly via e-mail and/or telephone, and
attending other meetings on behalf of the Club. ExCom members should
also be willing to serve on one of the Chapter's various committees.
NOMINATION PROCESSES
The general membership of the Chapter may nominate Chapter members for the
ExCom through a petition process. Any 3 or more Chapter members may
nominate any other eligible Chapter member to serve on the ExCom. A
petition bearing their signatures, along with notice that the nominated
person accepts the nomination, must be sent to the Chapter Secretary by
the closing date for nominations. A sample form for expediting this
process is found below. To facilitate the ballot process later, the
Nominating Committee asks that petitions accompanied by a maximum 100-word
personal profile of the candidate.
It is also possible for candidates to be nominated outside of the petition
process since Chapter Bylaws permit the Nominating Committee to recommend
for nomination "any eligible Chapter members...who agree to serve on the
ExCom". Chapter members interested in putting their names forward as
candidates through this route should contact the Nominating Committee
directly and send a personal profile to it at the address below.
NOMINATIONS MUST BE RECEIVED ON OR BEFORE FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 17TH 1999.

PART 1 OF 13:
13 Lucky Tips for Activists
by Errol Schweitzer 10/98
reproduce at will
Inevitable Disclaimer:
This column is not meant to offend hard-working activists who are
devoting much of their time and energy to social and environmental
issues. It is meant as a critique of those qualities that may keep us
from building an actual Movement. I know of many activists that are
guilty of the things listed below, including myself. So please don't feel
offended (which brings us to our first point...)
I
Have a sense of humour.
The world is not going to change overnight, no matter how hard you work.
Take time out to laugh at how messed up things really are. Take time out
to laugh at yourself and the incremental changes that you and others are
striving so hard for. A good chuckle now and then keeps things in
perspective and may actually make you feel better about the work you have
accomplished. Making fun of yourself and other activists may be a form of
critique, and we all know that...
