URBAN NATURE WALK - contributed by Heather Breeze
Join us Sunday, May 4 for a one-hour informal tour of Point Pleasant Park.
Club members will lead a guided nature walk on the birds, plants, and
trees found in Point Pleasant. Find out about the reptiles and other
urban animals hiding in Halifax's South end. We'll also discuss why dogs
and bicycles are restricted from certain areas of the park. The walk will
end with a barbecue (bring your own food, no alcohol please).
Everyone is welcome, although the discussion will be of most interest to
children and adults over age 12. Bring binoculars if you have them, and
dress for the weather. The group will meet at the Tower Road parking lot
at 2 p.m.

> > The newly revived Conservation Working Group has identified its priority
> > issues for the upcoming months. We will focus on the Nova Scotia
> > Protected Areas strategy, including the issues of the removal of Jim
> > Campbells Barren from the Protected Areas list, and the redrawing of the
> > boundaries of the Tobeatic region, as well as the "wood crisis" in Nova
> > Scotia. Clear-cutting on Crown Land is a prime component of the crisis.
> > The upcoming federal and provincial elections will provide an opportunity

ELECTIONEERING ANYONE? - by Paul Falvo
Sierra Club plays a major role in US elections ... educating people on who
the "good" candidates are, campaigning for them and even hounding the evil
ones at public events. The Club publishes a booklet on how to do this
effectively. In the US it's non-partisan ... they select the best
candidate on a case by case basis for each riding. It's a great way to
let politicians know that concern for the planet = votes
We could do something similar here. But I'm out of the country til July
so I'll be put of action on this campaign. If you're interested contact
Nadia Stuewer.
