Park, will be leading a guided tour to answer questions early next week
(July 22 or 23, to be confirmed). Is anyone interested in attending on
behalf of the Chebucto Group? Please contact Nadia, 425-5119.

CONSERVATION WORKING GROUP UPDATE
The Conservation Working Group and members of the Excomm helped staff the
Sierra Club table at last weekend's 9th Atlantic Earth Festival. Thanks
to everyone who helped out (especially Allison for organizing us), and
thank you to the AEF volunteers for their hard work!
The Sierra Club was represented by Elizabeth May at a press conference
held on July 8 by the Coalition of Concerned Groups for the Relisting of
Jim Campbells Barren. 43 groups belong to the Coalition and
representatives of more than 26 were in attendance. The Coalition
presented petitions bearing more than 8600 signatures to the leaders of
the opposition parties, John Hamm and Robert Chisholm. John Savage was
invited to attend but declined. He was presented with the petitions in
his office later that afternoon. The press conference was well attended.
Elizabeth May stated that the Alberta government had used the example of
the Barren to allow mining near Jasper National Park.
The Chebucto Group has joined a coalition of groups which aim to develop
an Enviromental Mining Council in Nova Scotia. Henrietta Mann (tel:
496-8235) will be the Chebucto Group's representative to the coalition.
The Conservation Committee is looking into management practices at Point
Pleasant Park, due to concerns raised about the many trees being cut down
and removed from the Park. We are also continuing to look into the
development of a wood chipper in Sheet Harbour and its potential impact
on forestry and land use practices in the surrounding area.
To contact the Conservation Committee, please call Nadia at 425-5119 or
email Cass

WANTED: BIOLOGISTS! Contributed by Paul Falvo
The Canadian Environmental Defence Fund (CEDF) is an NGO that helps
grassroots citizens' groups gain access to environmental justice. We
assist eligible groups to raise funds for legal battles, and through our
Legal and Expert Assistance Programme (LEAP) maintain a list of lawyers,
planners, scientists and other professionals willing to provide their
services pro bono or at reduced rates to deserving groups.
Being in the LEAP database is not a binding commitment. One or more
experts from the database are selected for a given case; we contact them
with details and ask if they are interested before giving their names to
the citizens' group(s).
Biologists are needed!
If you are a biologist concerned with environmental issues -- or if you
know someone who is -- or if you have suggestions on how we can get in
touch with biologists or lists of biologists -- please let us know. We
have a small information package we'd like to send them (by postal mail)
explaining LEAP and how to join.
Thanks!
Paul Falvo, LEAP Coordinator
Canadian Environmental Defence Fund
