Updating more general work earlier with similar prognoses, a recent more sp=
ecific publication in a major journal below* records a serious (34-36%) dec=
line in arthropod/insect species richness, in just the one decade sampled, =
2008-2016/7. This is from a large number of sites (in protected grasslands=
mainly in nature reserves, but adjacent to farming) and in forests in Germ=
any. The measured declines in biomass and in the number of individuals in =
grasslands was even more severe in that decade, 67% and 78%, respectively, =
though less marked in forests. Over 1 million individuals were counted con=
tained in 2675 species.
The authors tie this decline to broad-scale land use and agricultural pract=
ices/ development.

Kunin** comments upon the implications for the food web, including on polli=
nation and on observed declines in insect-eating birds and in arthropod-pol=
linated plants.

*Seibold, S. et al (19 authors) (2019) Arthropod decline in grasslands and =
forests is associated with landscape-level drivers. Nature 574: 671-4 (31 =
Oct 2019).
**Kunin, W.E., ibid., page 641-2. Commentary on this work.
