I read an article this week on Little Blue Herons that explained they have a post-breeding dispersal, in which many of the herons tend to travel northwards. If the adults and first-summer birds disperse from the breeding grounds, this would presumably leave better feeding for the juveniles and perhaps increase their survival rates.

Wind direction and strength likely determine how many reach Nova Scotia in any given year.

Cheers,
Susann
