I saw a female C Merganser push off from a shrubby island in a stillwater about 10’ from where I was standing at the water’s edge this morning in the Forties, Lun Co. I witnessed an unidentified waterbird doing the same thing in the exact same place a few weeks ago. Do C Mergansers nest on the ground? I have always heard of them using some kind of cavity, rather than an open nest site. After it launched it drifted to a deeper part and stayed there preening for at least 20min (when the mosquitoes drove me out). This stillwater is part of a brook connecting a small lake with Sherbrooke L. Nancy D Sent from my iPad
