Dr. John Kearney will present a talk on =93Understanding Nocturnal Bird

the Southwest Chapter of the Nova Scotia Bird Society at the Yarmouth =

Museum and Archives on April 23 at 7:00 PM.=20

The talk will highlight the advantages of nocturnal migration for birds, =
the
many challenges they face along their route, and the strategies used to
successfully complete their epic journeys twice each year.=20

Acoustic monitoring uses specially designed microphones, recorders, and
software to detect and analyze the flight calls of nocturnal migrants. =
Dr.
Kearney will demonstrate how acoustic monitoring provides a wealth of =
data
for a greater understanding of bird migration and how this technology =
may
soon have much potential for more widespread use by scientists and =
birders
alike.

Dr. Kearney is an environmental anthropologist who has worked with =
coastal
communities around the world on environmental and natural resource =
issues.
He has a BSc from Acadia University, a Masters in Environmental Studies =
from
Dalhousie University, and a PhD in Anthropology from Universit=E9 Laval. =
His
publications focus on community-based conservation and resource =
management,
and he is the co-author, with Patrick Kerans, of the book: Turning the =
World
Right Side Up: Science, Community, and Democracy. He has been a birder =
since
the age of 13.
