I= t was a good calm night 7C to 5C but was deficient in auditory stimulus. The= usual woodcock was preforming at stop 1 at the Sunny Brae Cemetery. By stop= 5, I heard my first season peeper. At stops 6-10 there were one or two peep= ers or wood frogs calling at each stop but far from a chorus, just a call he= re and there through the survey period. =20 I heard a Black Scoter call as it flew over at drop 6 near the Pictou-Guys c= o border.=20 And as for owls- not a single response on any of the 10 stops. This is not u= nusual on this route as the woods which had been replanted after the Trafalg= ar fire of 1976 has been removed in last decade after most of the replanted P= ine became diseased. Sort of lends a bit of proof that no forest equals few o= r no owls!=20 Cheers Ken=20 Sent from my iPad Ken McKenna Stellarton=20 NS=20 > On Apr 15, 2019, at 9:04 AM, Randy Lauff <randy.lauff@gmail.com> wrote: >=20 > I once had a Loon wail at one of my stops...scared the guano out of me!=20= > _________________________________ > RF Lauff > Way in the boonies of > Antigonish County, NS. >=20 >=20 >> On Sat, 13 Apr 2019 at 10:11, James Hirtle <jrhbirder@hotmail.com> wrote:= >> I forgot to mention that I heard one spring peeper on the route and that t= here were a few wood frogs that gave half-hearted calls. I usually d= o the Middlewood/Vogler's Cove route last, but did it first this time. Doro= thy Poole and Lise Bell accompanied me. We had six barred owls and one nort= hern saw-whet. Only one of the owls was seen at the last stop. Of interest I= had Canada geese calling on two of the stops in regards to the barred owl c= alls. A first for me in owl monitoring. =20 >>=20 >> James R.
