What a day yesterday was. Just lovely. Had my breakfast tea on the steps listening to the birds song. It was Glorious! There were a number of Red-winged Blackbirds in the mix, in various stage of maturity, a female, as well, who arrived earlier in the month and has set up housekeeping in the swamp. There were a couple Brown headed Cowbirds including a female, and Grackles. Too many Grackles!! The regular small guys were there, Chickadees, Juncos, American Goldfinches, two Pine Siskins, Blue Jays, Starlings, Robins and Mourning doves as well as the woodpeckers various: Downy, Hairy and Northern Flickers. Nuthatches are still coming but mainly the White Breasted ones. Sparrows are starting to get a fancy dressed looking now, the White Throateds have been showy for a time but now the songs are flashing their rufus. At about suppertime we arrived back at the house and things were charged! There were blackbirds everywhere! Every one took to wing as we drove in the yard. Once we got out of their way, it literally rains black birds! There were 9 Brown headed Blackbirds including a female, 7 Red-winged Blackbirds and I don't know how many more Grackles. Trees held more of each. Well! There was a rhyme from my childhood that kept ringing in my head: 4 and 20 blackbirds, baked in a pie...
