The guest speaker will be Jake Walker, a researcher in the Biology Department at Acadia University. The title of his talk is "eBird and Science: How to turn recreational birding into hard data." Jake will describe the history of eBird and demonstrate how best to use eBird to create meaningful data. He will also present several applications of the eBird dataset including some of his own work in modeling long-term population trends. Jake is a researcher in the Biology Department at Acadia University in Wolfville, NS. His current projects include using radar to track movements of birds near renewable energy developments and using eBird data to model population trends. Jake received a B.Sc. in Natural Resources from Cornell University and studied American Woodcock breeding phenology for his M.Sc. at Trent University. Jake is a lifelong birder, but has only lived in Nova Scotia since 2014. Previous bird studies have taken him from the bayous of Mississippi to the Hudson Bay. Jake currently volunteers as one of the eBird reviewers for Nova Scotia and serves on the board of the Blomidon Naturalists Society.
