The main presentation will be Water and Wildlife in the Backyard by Doug Hickman The presentation will: (i) provide an overview of the creation of the water features in the garden= and different water =93zones=94 in the garden (e.g. open water, marsh etc.= ); (ii) look at water from different perspectives and forms and how it impacts= the garden and wildlife (e.g. ice and freeze/thaw can be quite a problem f= or the garden, but snow is wonderful for tracking animals); and (iii) the wildlife that is attracted to the garden. My background is as an environmental consultant, based in Nova Scotia but w= orking mostly in other places=97I have worked in 50 countries. My wife (Pam= Hickman) is perhaps the top author of natural history books for children i= n Canada. The idea that a garden should be a place that supports wildlife a= nd ecosystems seems normal to us. The specific design of the garden reflect= s influences from various countries/regions that we have adapted (not neces= sarily successfully!) the the climate, soils etc. of the property itself. The meeting is open to the public. For more information about the Blomidon Naturalists Society, visit http://w= ww.blomidonnaturalists.ca/.
