I came upon these two Ruffed Grouse in the middle of the road today locked into a staredown. I met them in a similar, but briefer, standoff a few days ago in roughly the same place. https://www.flickr.com/photos/150605880@N07/44955016871/in/dateposted-public/ They then began to circle one another, occasionally locking bills and flying at each other as shown. https://www.flickr.com/photos/150605880@N07/44042636055/in/dateposted-public/ https://www.flickr.com/photos/150605880@N07/44955014791/in/dateposted-public/ https://www.flickr.com/photos/150605880@N07/44234916944/in/dateposted-public/ https://www.flickr.com/photos/150605880@N07/44042639965/in/dateposted-public/ They were completely focussed and this confrontation went on for several minutes before a car appeared and I had to move- very slowly until they finally decided a vehicle was more important than their dispute and headed for the ditch. The scraggly tails and unwary actions suggest these may be younger birds (?). Nancy D E Dalhousie, Kings Co.
