Dear All,
It is an ill wind that blows no good. Somehow some Plantago major=20
plants, which have not been walked on, have unusually vigorous fruiting=20
spikes this year. The flower bearing length of the largest spike noticed=20
exceeds 17 inches and will likely exceed 20" by the time seeds are=20
mature.
The two White Ash trees, likely planted when the house was built in=20
1942, are unthrifty this year for the first time in 51 years of living=20
here. Early on many young leaves were reduced to veins by some leaf=20
feeding insect (appreciated by birds) and this has been followed by=20
death of the affected new shoots. Ash trees elsewhere seem healthy so=20
these trees may be approaching a terminal age for this site.
Atrichum undulatium was once common on a bank beside the driveway.=20
After I stopped mowing this steep bank it was smothered out and not seen=20
for 25+ years when I noticed a small stand last year near the SE corner=20
of the house. Tough luck; that got creamed this year when a nearby=20
section of plugged weeping tile was dug up and renewed.
If you had seen the mess generated by this operation you would=20
understand why it is called weeping tile.
