All,

Interesting discussion. I've only recently acquired camera gear that
allows me to photograph and make video clips taken from quite a distance.
I'm a moderately decent birder -- have been observing bird behaviour and
learning about their natural history since about age five. I'm not good on
identifying songs as I don't hear well, but have been making sound
recordings with video on my camera and also with a nice little pocket audio
recorder. I'm of the opinion that using cameras doesn't obstruct people
from diving deeper into the natural history of birds -- but may actually
assist by allowing more people to watch birds "up close". I say this
because I've been photographing insects for many years now -- since about
the time of the first affordable digital cameras around 2000. In that
time, I've seen the average citizen's interest in insects go from
practically zero, to quite a few. It has grown in step with the
availability of affordable cameras capable of taking excellent macro
photos. Sites like BugGuide that started off with just a few contributors,
now have thousands of members contributing photos of insects into a
database that has now become an amazing resource. The same occurred with
Moth Photographers Group, and iNaturalist. As well, there are now many
Facebook groups for people interested in specific insects and arachnids --
Robber Flies, Tiger Beetles, Jumping Spiders, Odonates, Moths, and so on.
What may have begun as a casual interest in photographing the occasional
caterpillar or butterfly, soon becomes much more as people with similar
interests take enjoyment in sharing photos and helping to identify the
unknowns. Many specialists are members of those same groups because they
are a good place to network with other entomologists, and also see what
people are photographing all over the continent and beyond. In the insect
forums, it is not unusual to see posts by curators of collections, authors
of field guides, and so on. I am also seeing this with reptiles and
amphibians -- people who didn't have that kind of keen interest before, now
have the means to "collect" and share their sightings. The good thing to
come out of all of this is public awareness of all of these creatures.
More people are now aware of not only the creature, but also the habitat
where it lives. They have become more protective about the creatures --
for example, many who photograph turtles are very concerned about
conservation -- noting areas of habitat destruction and locations of high
roadkill mortality, taking injured turtles to turtle rehab facilities,
reporting instances when they become aware of poaching, etc... To my
mind, cameras just provide a good gateway into becoming a naturalist --
often for people who didn't have the opportunity to spend time in the field
earlier in their lives, or who did not have a mentor to teach them the
basics and are now learning by networking with other naturalists online --
much as we do here, for that matter.

That is quite a sighting! Hope it sticks around for you or others to get a =
photo and/or recording. Is a detailed description, like yours, enough for i=
t to be confirmed or does this species require more?

A convincing Acadian Flycatcher was along the roadside of Gull Rock Road ab=
out 10am. I glimpsed it from the rear first, saw striking greenish colour f=
rom head down the back, and thought I had a Yellow-bellied. Then it turned =
and I could see whitish throat and
light malar, white extending down mid- breast to the belly and very pale y=
ellowish breast sides and flanks. It was a big bird, with long tail and win=
g extension. The bill, which was substantial, had a conspicuous yellowish- =
orange lower mandible.=C2=A0</p>

At this point, before I could even raise my camera, a car, the first I had =
seen all morning, came banging down the road and the bird took off. I could=
not find it again, but I did locate a Least Flycatcher, which was useful f=
or comparison.
