Hi David et al.

It depends on the stage of development. Larvae seem to be restricted to (s=
hort) grasses. However, nymphs and adults will climb up to about 1 -1/2 m. =
Higher, they would not encounter passing hosts. Have heard of people repo=
rting them "falling" from trees, but have not seen any evidence for that at=
 this point.

Since we tend to get more reports of Wood Ticks from the scalp area, suspec=
t they may be the higher climbers. Few Black-legged Ticks reported above t=
he neck - although we do get the occasional one from the area of the ear. (=
This is based on roughly 800 submissions in each of the last 4 years at the=
 NSM

Andrew

Hi Jane & All,
My legs are well sealed in; pant legs tucked in socks, a cut off sock p=
ulled up beyond high laced boots and then pulled down over the boots. But I=
often walk under branches, shrubs etc. and I suspect they drop on me.
Question. Do deer ticks here frequent only grass and not high foliage/p=
arts of shrubs and trees ?

I also have a 20% one from MEC, called Pi-Active. I=92ve certainly had bla=
ck flies and mosquitoes flying around me, but I didn=92t get any bites when=
I used it. I can=92t say for ticks because I wasn=92t in long grass.
When I know going through grass, I=92ve sprayed my clothes with pyrethrin (=
=93Bug-B-Gone=94).

 Dear All,
I bought some WOODS 20% Icaridin this year which "offers protection fro=
m mosquitoes and ticks for 12 hours and Black Flies for 10". It may offer b=
ut it does not deliver.
Thursday evening I sprayed and wiped it on bare arms, neck, cap and fac=
e. I typically had more than 10 Mosquitoes on my arms and some on face and =
neck throughout the one hour walk. And found a dog tick behind my left ear =
the following morning.
This morning just after getting up I found a dog tick on my neck (perha=
ps collected on my walk Friday). My clothing is not treated so the ticks ma=
y ride home in my clothing. But, because Mosquitoes ignore it, I wonder if =
the "Icaridin" in this product is more than mildly scented water. I need a =
tick picker.
