I did my usual route for what would have been the Spring Migration Count to=
day. I ended with 59 species. I had ten species of warblers including one=
Nashville and one Cape May. I normally would have three or four Nashville=
warblers during this time. Palm warblers seem to not be back yet, which i=
s odd. I only heard one, when I would normally have many. All of the plac=
es where I normally see them for this count were quiet and lacking thereof =
for this species. Ruby-crowned kinglets were missing. There also were far=
fewer American redstarts back. I normally get about a dozen along the Cen=
tennial Trail in Bridgewater and there were only three present. I had more=
yellow warblers then ever before. Gray catbirds do not seem to be at thei=
r normal haunts yet.

Northern cardinals are usually plentiful and I get many on the count. Toda=
y they were not active and I only heard one calling. I normally would see =
six to a dozen or more.

There also were not as many blue-headed vireos back. There were fewer herm=
it thrushes calling by a large amount.

I struck out altogether on barred owls and I always hear and see them.

I did hear my first bobolink at the end of Second Peninsula along the field=
edge making it's tinkling, bubbly call. I also had one spotted sandpiper =
in Pleasantville.

It is four days later than usual on this count and to me things seem odd in=
terms of numbers of everything, so is migration later this year or did som=
e species disappear earlier, like common loons. I only had four when I usu=
ally would have 15-20. Likely due to the lakes being open earlier. I did n=
ot find many ducks either, when they usually are plentiful still.
