According to the Peterson’s Guide to Bird Sounds of NA, this smack or chatter of the Winter Wren indicates agitation- and it does indeed sound like a very agitated bird. First time I had ever heard this call and I spent some time sitting on a rock with the Sibley’s app on my phone trying to figure out what it was- that pinned it down to a wren at least. Heard the exact same outburst when I returned along the path- nesting already? You can listen to it on this eBird checklist or the MacCauley link if you do not have an eBird account. https://ebird.org/canada/view/checklist/S44907019 https://macaulaylibrary.org/asset/96297901?__hstc=60209138.654ce176d843afbf64b3825199d7a408.1396643674838.1524601296635.1524606951748.126&__hssc=60209138.2.1524606951748&__hsfp=2933905051 The first I have seen or heard a Winter Wren in my area this year- also had my first Yellow-rumped Warbler singing today too.
