I use a great app called GPS Status. As the name implies it uses GPS to
determine location, speed, acceleration heading, distance, etc., and it
uses your phone's sensors for such things as brightness & colour
temperature, elevation, magnetic field, step counter, . . . and it can
store locations. You can use it as a level. The compass is very
accurate. The app is free and doesn't depend on cell reception.

This is one of my favourite apps. If you happen to be on a plane or a
train by a window, you can know almost as much as the cabin crew. It
works fine in any mode of travel as long as your phone can "see"
satellites. Right now inside the house I'm locked onto 15 of 18 visible
satellites, with a location error of 6 m.

Cheers,
Doug Linzey
