Hello All,
I have not followed this closely but the general idea of running =20
field sighting observations through some filter on the spot to establish=20
'first arrival' figures brings to mind "Sentence first; trial later" or=20
"Beware lest in grasping for the image you lose the substance."
Is it not preferable to simply accumulate field observations and let=
=20
analysis of the data in due time draw such conclusions as may appear to=20
be valid ? There are many subtle variations to migration. A species may=20
be present in NS year round but individuals of that species may shift=20
within the province or move out and be replaced by individuals from more=20
northerly or inland areas.
I suspect it is these subtle seasonal movements within the province=20
or region which enable presence year round in some cases. Why throw=20
subtle insights away because they don't fit a binary yes/no model ? And=20
for that matter what is the value of timely information about first=20
arrival ?
     End of sermon.
Yt, Dave Webster, Kentville
