On Monday, my wife noticed a large flock of ducks on Miller Lake viewed from=
 HWY 103 near Fall River as she was driving by. Today I went out and found o=
ver 100 Ring-necked Ducks there with the vast majority, bright and energetic=
 drakes.=20

r not. Look at the flock composition: if it is made up of both sexes and imm=
atures, it is certainly an overwintering flock, or at most has moved only a s=
hort distance (being in a multiflora thicket is another clue to local origin=
). if, on the other hand, you find a flock on your lawn, looking around and t=
rying to feed voraciously, and all big bright males, they are spring migrant=
s. The same principle applies, with variations, for grackles: migrant flocks=
, entirely males, tend to show up in treetops in significant numbers just af=
ter arrival, displaying and calling frequently.

 Availability of data is much different now than during pre-eBird days. We h=
ave to take this into account to know where to focus our efforts.
