st year, with a good possibility of a few more from the feeder reports. Mo=
st abundant were European Starling, American Crow, Black-capped Chickadee, =
and American Goldfinch, much as expected, although the order could change w=
ith feeder results. These and the other 31 "A-List" species (those seen o=
n 90% or more of the last 10 counts) were all seen except the Evening Grosb=
eak - a major miss although it has been declining in recent years. Another=
ng less common species missed, Surf Scoter, Horned Grebe, Purple Sandpiper,=
he time in the past decade. If anyone in the area knows of the occurrence =
of these species during the count period, please let me know.

At the other end of the highlights, several species rare in our area in win=
ter were observed. No species new for our cumulative list, but there were =
two 2nd records - the Peregrine Falcon (recently removed from the endangere=
d list in NS), seen by Sydney & Nelson Penner in North Kingston, and a Dick=
cissel (first recorded in 2015), seen by the Colvilles in Melvern Square.

There were also two 3rd records ever: Yellow-breasted Chat, found at Nictau=
x Falls by Claire Diggins and Britt Roscoe, and Fox Sparrow, seen at Victor=
ia Vale by Richard Stern and Ron Blackert. Other highlights of uncommon sp=
ecies found were Razorbill, Great Blue Heron, Grey (Canada) Jay, and both c=
rossbills.

Record highs were set for Canada Goose (more than the 1984 record of 400) a=
nd probably other species when the results are final. Anyone interested in=
past results can find a complete table prepared by my brother Larry Neily =
at

 http://www.neilyworld.com/neilyworld/CBC-Kingston.htm .

et-together, Twila Robar-DeCoste and John DeCoste of Aylesford.

Good Birding to all in 2018,
