Thanks for bringing this to our attention. Given the economic circumstances of the Canso area, I wouldn't be surprised if this thing goes through, but they need to make every effort to mitigate the likely subsequent environmental impacts. I see another letter coming! J From: naturens-owner@chebucto.ns.ca [mailto:naturens-owner@chebucto.ns.ca] On Behalf Of John Kearney Sent: December 13, 2017 10:26 AM To: naturens@chebucto.ns.ca Subject: [NatureNS] Birds and Canso Spaceport Hi All, For those who are interested in the effect of the Canso Spaceport on birds, I have published an assessment in my conservation notebook which can be found at http://www.johnfkearney.com/cgi-bin/ebb/blog2/index.php. I only briefly discuss the environmental effects of the rocket fuel unsymmetrical dimethylhydrazine (UDMH). However, I believe it is a human health and safety hazard that has been greatly underplayed in the enthusiasm for the project. UDMH which powered the early years of the US space program is no longer produced in that country because it is so dangerous and toxic. UDMH is now powering the nuclear missiles of North Korea. The fuel is believed to be coming from production facilities in Russia or China. Here is an interesting article from the New York times about UDMH: https://www.nytimes.com/2017/09/17/world/asia/north-korea-rocket-fuel-missil es.html.
