The pipe is too slippery for raccoons to climb - it also keeps the squirrels off (as long as it is far enough from trees that they can't jump to the feeders). The pipe can be purchased in a variety of diameters and can accommodate even quite large diameter poles. We have lots of raccoons and squirrels and they can't get to the feeders - much to their dismay. No need to take them in at night.
