Still plenty of good butterflies on the wing, and the warm temperatures/ple=
ntiful nectar plants made for some easy observing and good photo ops.

On Saturday, there was a blue butterfly flitting about in the backyard - wh=
ich I subsequently netted and photographed for ID purposes -- it was an Azu=
re, which came as pretty a big surprise. The last one I saw was over two m=
onths ago, on July 20.

My understanding is that the latest research has confirmed that there is on=
ly one Azure species present in the Maritimes, Celastrina lucia:

azures-confirms-that-just-one-azure-species-occurs-in-the-maritimes/

I'd love to know if anyone else seen any Azures this late in the season (th=
is year or previously)as well...? This was the first I was able to confir=
m, but I thought I had seen at least two others last week too (while drivin=
g so couldn't confirm).

Another late season observation this weekend was the Least Skipper -- we sa=
w 7 at one site on Friday, and at least one more at a separate location tod=
ay. This is 11 days later than my own personal previous "late date" for th=
is little butterfly, and It's also a couple days later than the latest date=
it shows online for the MBA (which was Sept 22).

In addition to these two, other species observed this weekend included:

Clouded Sulphur

Cabbage White

Northern Crescent

Common Ringlet

Peck's Skipper

Mourning Cloak

American Lady

Red Admiral

Painted Lady (by the dozens)
