--94eb2c18eeec0115580558e9b626 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="UTF-8" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable Dear naturalist community, Our research group at Saint Mary=E2=80=99s University, the Ecology of Plant= s in Communities lab (EPIC lab), is undertaking a study in coastal barrens on the Chebucto Peninsula. We wanted to let you know about this project and to ask for your help keeping an eye out for some new equipment that we are using. With permission from the landowners, we have installed =E2=80=9Ctatter flag= s=E2=80=9D at several coastal barrens near Halifax. These flags are being used to give us a relative idea of wind intensity in different habitats near the shoreline. This research is needed to help scientists better understand the ecology of the heathland plants that live on the coastal barrens. The tatter flags are part of a student-led thesis project investigating coastal erosion and its effects on heathland plants. Each small (3" x 9.5") flag was hand sewn and dyed by the students in a dark green color and hung low to the ground, specifically not to interfere with the beautiful vistas within the conservation areas we are so fortunate to have access to. With our limited funding, this alternative to weather stations is being used to help the students understand how wind intensity differs between different microhabitats on barrens. The flags are inconspicuous and will only be in place for a short period of time (until September 30, 2017) but, if you do happen to notice them, please do not tamper with them or remove them. If you see someone else investigating the flags, please let them know what they are about and feel free to pass along our contact information. We would be happy to discuss any concerns or questions people have. Recently, some of the flags were removed without permission, perhaps by users of hiking trails, and we are concerned more may be taken in the future. Although the flags are inexpensive, they are a lot of work to assemble and removing them means there will be gaps in our data. We considered putting out signage to inform others about our research project but on these windy sites and for the very short period of time the flags will be installed, it was not feasible. When our project is finished, we share our findings with interested groups, (e.g.) landowners and conservation organizations to help inform their work. As a group, we take pride in our strong tradition of teaching not only courses at Saint Mary=E2=80=99s University but also in sharing knowledge wi= th our broader community by assisting ecological interpretation with guided hikes, planning educational activities for childrens groups, and voluntarily sharing our expertise to environmental and naturalist organizations whenever possible. If you have any further questions or concerns, please let us know. Thank you so much for your support!
