In other but related news I started to write about the following=20 item which recently was brought to my attention and could not continue=20 entry. Now by forwarding the initial entry I see that I can scroll below=20 and add to this forwarded message. Strange but true. ------ Forwarded Message ------ From: "David" <dwebster@glinx.com> To: "naturens@chebucto.ns.ca" <naturens@chebucto.ns.ca> Cc: "David Webster" <dwebster@glinx.com> Sent: 9/10/2017 6:28:21 PM Subject: An economic and labor intensive alternative to machine=20 intensive clear cuts Hello: https://forestsinternational.org/news/post/cap-and-trade-could-mean-million= s-for-ns-rural-communities The above link describes an approach which just might deliver=20 forestry in NS from the insane idea that best management consists of=20 mowing everything 24 hours a day, 365.25 days a year so as to generate=20 maximum profit per minute with no thought of tomorrow. I am not sure how they figure carbon credits, fiber harvested for=20 lumber or fuel on a sound wood volume basis would be one way, but this=20 approach would involve selective cutting (extracting fiber while keeping=20 the forest) in a labor-intensive manner. Thus such practices as horse=20 logging, felling by chainsaw and actually generating employment while=20 clearing windfalls or thinning for better growth could be profitable as=20 opposed to dependent upon owners prepared to eat large losses; few stick=20 around for seconds. So I very much hope that this rational approach will be supported by= =20 those opposed to clear cuts because it over time could achieve that and=20 much more; such as curtailing rural out-migration and sale of family=20 woodlots at fire sale prices to clear cut interests. And to the extent=20 it takes root, it might even generate rural in-migration and best of all=20 give life to the "Small is Beautiful" concept.
