I have noticed that different folks have different reactions to tick =
bites, and the nature of the reactions can change in individuals over =
time. =20

=20

However, a vaccine to generate immunity to the microbes the critters =
carry is another question. I understand that one of the big drug =
companies did develop a vaccine against Lyme almost twenty years ago. =
Some folks got arthritis, blamed the vaccine, and launched lawsuits. =
The company withdrew the vaccine, and now we are looking at a developing =
public health problem which threatens to become very serious.

=20

I agree with Kevin - and have had dozens also.=20

I wonder if we develop an immunity to their bites.

There is talk of a vaccine but if the body didn't develop

an immunity a vaccine would be useless.

When either species bite me now a little red welt appears

and disappears quickly - something like a wasp sting

of which I've had a number!

Anyway don't let them stop you enjoying the beach!=20

Based on my observations (and dozens of BLTicks removed from various =
parts of my anatomy) I'd have to say they are most common here in the =
Lunenburg area in spring. Tick numbers drop off a bit in mid to late =
summer then there is a second peak in the fall. Nymphs seem to become =
more common in late spring and peak in the fall. But again that is based =
mostly on my own encounters. They can be picked up any time including =
mid winter days when the temperature gets near or above freezing.=20

Just a note about black-legged ticks and their seasonality:

=20

Down here in the banana belt, my three or four encounters with the =
little buggers were all in or near early November.

=20

We need a vaccine.

Hi Jim,

=20

Did she say what part of Cherry Hill Beach? I=E2=80=99ve thoroughly =
birded CHB several times this year and I have never gotten a tick there. =
But I don=E2=80=99t go in the high grass, at least not until late fall, =
so I suspect that must be where she got them?

=20

That is sad news about the gannets; I hope a cause and solution is =
found. Does NSBS have any funds for an investigator!

Just a heads up on a high concentration of black-legged ticks at Cherry =
Hill Beach. A relative who does recuse work on wildlife was loaded with =
probably 40-50 black-legged ticks when she did a gannet rescue. She =
ended up with lymes disease and had very severe symptoms before =
treatment. =20

=20

She wonders why there are so many gannet calls this year and why most of =
them are dead by the time they reach Hope For Wildlife or why they are =
mostly dying between pick-up and transportation.

Does anyone have an explanation for this. One recently was ex-rayed and =
was determined to have an old gun shot wound, so likely died due to lead =
poisoning. =20

=20

Sincerely,

=20

James R. Hirtle
