JULY 20, 2017 (Thurs.) =97 Shorebird monitoring walk on EVANGELINE =
BEACH:

- high tide was at 10:37 a.m.;
- I arrived at 12:05 p.m., at the viewing platform & public stairs east =
of canteen;
- conditions brightly sunny, warm, moderate wind from east;
- I walked eastward from the stairs, stopping frequently for scanning =
with binoculars;
- very quickly I found a large claw from a lady crab (Ovalipes);
- then, attached to some flotsam seaweed, was a very small cluster of =
Loligo squid eggs (no more were seen on this walk today);=20
- I was surprised to find a dying? male luna moth on the moist beach =
sand (upper beach);
- 2 adult bald eagles with a very large dark fledged youngster;
- at 12:53 p.m. I flushed a single peep (unidentified small shorebird =
(sandpiper, prob. least or semipalmated) from the large beach rocks =
(near the Merks/Jackson home);
- near the ebbing water line were 2 herring gulls (ad., imm.) and an ad. =
great black-backed gull (on my return walk back to the west I saw about =
20 more herring gulls);
- at 1:00 p.m., to the northeast from the Merks/Jackson house near the =
east end of the beach, it was nice to see two restless flocks of peeps =
(unident. small shorebirds, i.e., sandpipers and/or plovers) =97 there =
were 200+ in one and another 200+ in the other flock =97 both flocks, =
which joined up and separated and rejoined, were very restless, =
frequently taking off and then relanding in dense assemblages, which =
were probably still in post-roosting behaviour with not much foraging =
yet =97 I didn=92t see any falcons today, but those peep flocks were a =
long way off from me on the upper beach;

- on my return walk back to the canteen & viewing platform, at 1:27 p.m. =
I saw about 40 peeps flying west (from the east) along the water line;
- I got back to the canteen at 1:45 p.m.;
- other sightings were 1+1 flying double-crested cormorants;
- surprisingly, no crows seen today at all.

TOTAL PEEP SHOREBIRDS SEEN TODAY: 400+ + 40 + 1 =3D 400+.
