One last comment; perhaps two.


I've been reminded of one more cause of ambiguity in these codes, namely th=
e propensity for name changes in bird species. The list I gave was the orig=
inal 1978 version of conflicting codes. Someone reminded me that Yellow War=
bler no longer collides with Yellow Wagtail, because the latter is now call=
ed Eastern Yellow Wagtail, and yellow Warbler has reverted back to followin=
g the rule as YEWA. The correspondent mentioned he liked the old "why-war" =
(YWAR) code better though.


Second point: the discussion on Herring Gull is illustrative of the possibi=
lities for confusion. As Herring Gull and Heerman's Gull are colliders, the=
y were given HERG and HEEG respectively as codes. Cheers, Larry
