Hi All,
I have reviewed the 2007 and 2012 environmental assessments for this
project. You are absolutely correct that the avian assessments are terribly
out of date, both in terms of the last time field observations were made
(2008) and the changes in the status of species of conservation concern
since that time. The consultants, Stantec, do in fact focus their avian
assessment on species of conservation concern. As someone who has conducted
many avian assessments for development projects, I can confirm that
regulators, at this time, tend to be more focused on evaluating bird impacts
based on the conservation status of individual species rather than on a more
holistic approach to ecosystem and diversity criteria. This can be seen, as
well, in the approach of the consultant, who makes recommendations for
project mitigation through micro-habitat considerations in the protection of
species of conservation concern. I am sure that Dr. Westwood is already
aware of these problems with the environmental assessment. I would like to
add the following critique and suggestions in case there are any points that
she has not already considered:
* Continue the focus of the consultant on the environmental assessment
of species of conservation concern with an emphasis on how much they are out
of date.
* Highlight the fact that the avian assessment is based on 6 breeding
bird surveys conducted on June 26 or later. These dates are past the time
when birds are singing regularly and thus cannot provide an accurate
assessment of the birds breeding in the area.
* There is little indication that any surveys of species of
conservation concern were conducted outside of the breeding season.
Stop-over habitat during migration appears to have been given no
consideration.
* Develop a more holistic habitat assessment for the species of
conservation concern in the area that emphasizes habitat connectivity and
the dynamic inter-relatedness of habitat types rather than an exclusive
focus on protecting known specific nesting sites. Habitat analysis should
also include an assessment of their significance in both breeding and
non-breeding seasons.
In my opinion, presenting evidence on how the project might destroy habitat
for species of conservation concern, where habitat is understood as more
than the microhabitat around a particular nest site, provides the best hope
of protecting birds from any potential negative impacts.

Hi everyone...
This was sent in from Alana Westwood today asking for anyone who may be
birding in the Stewiacke area to contact Robin Tress if you can help and to
obtain additional information on the target areas.
"The Alton Natural Gas Storage project plans to build massive underground
salt caverns to store natural gas near Stewiacke, Nova Scotia, as well as a
pipeline to transport gas to and from the caverns. The pipeline route
currently intersects the Stewiacke River Wilderness Area and the St.
Andrew's River Wilderness Area, as well as crossing under the Stewiacke
River and many wetlands. This area has a huge biodiversity potential, the
ecotype is underrepresented in Nova Scotia's protected areas, and
preliminary surveys completed in Summer 2006 found nearly 70 species along
the proposed route.
These surveys were completed over 10 years ago, and the company has not yet
attained all the permissions necessary for the project. This ecosystem
provides unique habitat for many bird species, and we would like your help
conducting surveys of the area! We'll use the data collected to improve our
understanding of the area, its value for biodiversity, and our ability to
engage in discussions about conditions approvals."
It would be very helpful to record your sightings on eBird as a way of
coordinating the results.

torage project plans to build massive underground salt caverns to store nat=
ural gas near Stewiacke, Nova Scotia, as well as a pipeline to transport ga=
s to and from the caverns. The pipeline route currently intersects the Stew=
iacke River Wilderness Area and the St. Andrew’s River Wilderness Are=
a, as well as crossing under the Stewiacke River and many wetlands. This ar=
ea has a huge biodiversity potential, the ecotype is underrepresented in No=
va Scotia’s p<span class=3Dtextexposedshow>rotected areas, and prelim=
inary surveys completed in Summer 2006 found nearly 70 species along the pr=
oposed route. </span></span><span style=3D'font-family:"Calibri",sans-serif=

se surveys were completed over 10 years ago, and the company has not yet at=
tained all the permissions necessary for the project. This ecosystem provid=
