Thank you both. I see I will be better off collecting maple seeds this Fall. My mother sweeps buckets of Red Maple seeds off her driveway in Bridgewater so I have an easy source. At the moment she is taking her broom to the piles of red flowers from these trees. For some reason the dog finds them irresistable treats. Nectar?

I haven't propagated red maple specifically, but attempted to do so with sugar maples this winter. I forwent the use of rooting horomone, just 'cause. I clipped the whips in late March, and stuck them directly in pots with soil. Kept them moist and inside my home. The leaves emerged from the buds immediately, but quickly died away - the plants were doomed. When I pulled them from the pot, roughly one month after planting, no roots had formed.

I'm new to this business, but I think hardwoods are better propagated in fall, so the roots have time to establish before the leaves and flowers emerge from the buds.

I am wondering if anyone has tried this and has any helpful advice. I have clipped off a bunch of small (~5mm diameter) red maple suckers coming up from the base of a tree. Right now they are in a bucket of water. Should I poKe them in the ground as is or allow them to sprout roots first?

I am trying to fill a bare area where red maples had been before it had to be dug up.
