One summer fifty-odd years ago, we arrived home to discover a red squirrel
atop our swallow house. We chased the little bugger off and my father
opened the house. The baby swallows inside had all been chewed to death.
That marked the start of a vendetta on "tree rats" chez nous.

That particular war is over; we still have some red squirrels, but the
swallows no longer nest here, despite a couple of attempts to attract with
new houses.

Subject: [NatureNS] Swallow box report

Hi All,

The arrival of the first of this years Tree Swallows and the last good
weather for the foreseeable future motivated me to clean-out and repair my
swallow boxes. Last season I prepared 30 boxes in the fields near my house.
It was at best an average year but better than I had expected given the lack
of swallows observed in the area last year.

Of the 30 boxes 15 contained completed nests - 13 with breeding evidence
and 2 with red squirrel nests on top of a swallow nests. One box contained
a partial swallow nest . Fourteen boxes contain no evidence of swallow
nesting activity. Of these 3 had completed Red Squirrel nests and 3 had
partial Red Squirrel nests. The only interesting note was that one of the
completed Red Squirrel nests contained a good handful of rose hips. I've
never found that fruit in a squirrel nest before although I expect it's a
good winter source of food.

I've decided to move a number of my less active boxes to better
locations as much of the habitat near my house is converting from open
fields to young forest. Many of the empty boxes last season seemed related
to the loss of habitat. All the best.

                     Fritz
