This is a multi-part message in MIME format. ------=_NextPart_000_0025_01D2C593.F2151CE0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="UTF-8" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable Hi Randy: =20 These were presumably unusual results for your area? Have the forests = been cut down recently? Small mammal crash? Were they just = =E2=80=9Cout and about=E2=80=9D and couldn=E2=80=99t be bothered coming = in to defend the territory? Nesting failures? It=E2=80=99s always = interesting to speculate. =20 =20 I checked with Bernard Forsythe to see how his owl nesting activities = are progressing this year. He tells me that it=E2=80=99s hard to beat = the bumper crop of barred owls from last year. He banded 39 chicks from = roughly 15 nest boxes in 2016. This year, from the 7 pairs he=E2=80=99s = checked near his house, one pair has 3 eggs and the others have only two = eggs. I guess it=E2=80=99s not uncommon for them to take a break from = raising the large clutches from the previous year. The chicks in his = back yard (food supplemented) hatched a week ago, the others should = hatch this week, he tells me. =20 I have a route to do, and should have completed it last night, if not = for a very sore throat threatening to bring me down. Now I stare at the = dismal forecast and must conduct the route at very next opportunity, = which may have to take place in between showers. Deadline is looming. =20 Donna =20 From: naturens-owner@chebucto.ns.ca = [mailto:naturens-owner@chebucto.ns.ca] On Behalf Of Randy Lauff Sent: May-05-17 9:21 AM To: NatureNS Subject: [NatureNS] NOS - a great night for ambiance =20 Last night I ran my Nocturnal Owl Survey = (http://www.birdscanada.org/volunteer/atowls/) under ideal conditions = (low-no wind, very bright half moon, very little run-off noise) with a = student, Danny MacDonald who had not yet seen an owl in the wild. We had = grouse, snipe, woodcock, porcupine and a not so distant pack of coyotes, = but not a single owl. =20 Oh well, as I tell my students, "zeroes are data, too." =20 Randy _________________________________ RF Lauff Way in the boonies of Antigonish County, NS. ------=_NextPart_000_0025_01D2C593.F2151CE0 Content-Type: text/html; charset="UTF-8" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable <html xmlns:v=3D"urn:schemas-microsoft-com:vml" = xmlns:o=3D"urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" = xmlns:w=3D"urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:word" = xmlns:m=3D"http://schemas.microsoft.com/office/2004/12/omml" = xmlns=3D"http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40">
<meta = http-equiv=3DContent-Type content=3D"text/html; charset=3Dutf-8"><meta = name=3DGenerator content=3D"Microsoft Word 12 (filtered = medium)">
<body lang=3DEN-CA link=3Dblue = vlink=3Dpurple>

<span = style=3D'font-size:11.0pt;font-family:"Calibri","sans-serif";color:#1F497= D'>Hi Randy:

<span = style=3D'font-size:11.0pt;font-family:"Calibri","sans-serif";color:#1F497= D'>

<span = style=3D'font-size:11.0pt;font-family:"Calibri","sans-serif";color:#1F497= D'>These were presumably unusual results for your area?=C2=A0 Have the = forests been cut down recently?=C2=A0 Small mammal crash?=C2=A0 Were = they just =E2=80=9Cout and about=E2=80=9D and couldn=E2=80=99t be = bothered coming in to defend the territory?=C2=A0 Nesting = failures?=C2=A0 It=E2=80=99s always interesting to speculate.=C2=A0 =

<span = style=3D'font-size:11.0pt;font-family:"Calibri","sans-serif";color:#1F497= D'>

<span = style=3D'font-size:11.0pt;font-family:"Calibri","sans-serif";color:#1F497= D'>I checked with Bernard Forsythe to see how his owl nesting activities = are progressing this year.=C2=A0 He tells me that it=E2=80=99s hard to = beat the bumper crop of barred owls from last year.=C2=A0 He banded 39 = chicks from roughly 15 nest boxes in 2016.=C2=A0 This year, from the 7 = pairs he=E2=80=99s checked near his house, one pair has 3 eggs and the = others have only two eggs.=C2=A0 I guess it=E2=80=99s not uncommon for = them to take a break from raising the large clutches from the previous = year.=C2=A0 The chicks in his back yard (food supplemented) hatched a = week ago, the others should hatch this week, he tells = me.

<span = style=3D'font-size:11.0pt;font-family:"Calibri","sans-serif";color:#1F497= D'>

<span = style=3D'font-size:11.0pt;font-family:"Calibri","sans-serif";color:#1F497= D'>I have a route to do, and should have completed it last night, if not = for a very sore throat threatening to bring me down.=C2=A0 Now I stare = at the dismal forecast and must conduct the route at very next = opportunity, which may have to take place in between showers.=C2=A0 = Deadline is looming.

<span = style=3D'font-size:11.0pt;font-family:"Calibri","sans-serif";color:#1F497= D'>

<span = style=3D'font-size:11.0pt;font-family:"Calibri","sans-serif";color:#1F497= D'>Donna

<span = style=3D'font-size:11.0pt;font-family:"Calibri","sans-serif";color:#1F497= D'>
<div = style=3D'border:none;border-top:solid #B5C4DF
